Things I don't like about rock shows

1. People who talk through the entire concert. Seriously? And you paid $45 for this why?

2. When people cheer after the bandleader says, "This next song is from our upcoming album." Bullshit. No one likes when they play the new stuff.

3. Not being able to see the stage. I'm 5'3" so this happens, oh, pretty much all the time. When I open my venue there will be a corral up front for the short folks.

4. Ticketmaster "convenience" fees.

5. When the headliner doesn't go on until 11 pm. OK, I admit it: I'm old. But really, it's hard to rock when you're thinking about bed. (Pretend I didn't just use "rock" as a verb.)

6. Drunk guys. Who always seem to be standing near me. Acting drunk.

I agree w/ many of those, and shows don't cost as much where I live. But when I did live in NYC, I went to see the Foo Fighters at Roseland. That is not a quiet band. Some douchebag was talking so loudly about this live show or that bootleg from whenever that he was bugging the shit out of me. Finally, I turned to him and said, "Look. You can listen to whatever live version of this you want later, but this is the only time it's ever going to be JUST LIKE THIS. It's live music. SHUT UP OR GO LISTEN TO YOUR CDS." People around me applauded. Also, my verification word is groin. Um, whatup?

YES! You are my concert hero. I recently found something else that worked: when two women were talking loudly during Nick Lowe, I turned to one of them and said, "I'm sorry, but this is one of my favorite songs." (It wasn't, but whatever.) She apologized and from then on in they talked much more quietly. Granted, they weren't douchebags. (Sorry about the verification word. Mine was equou. Sounds made up.)

The people nowadays have no attention spans. They just want to brag that they're at a show, so they text and take photos. Everyone's a journalist now. Damned phones. Turn them off, exist in the moment, and listen to the music that you paid a pretty penny to hear.

I was at a Tori Amos' show early in her career, when it was just she and her piano on the stage. A young girl near me was singing along to every song. I leaned over and said, "Can you please stop singing?" She looked shocked and about to cry, and said, "Well, I'll stop, but I think it's very rude that you asked me to." *I'm* the rude one? I said, "I didn't pay to hear *you* sing." On two other Tori occasions, Tori herself stopped mid-song to ask specific people to stop talking. Once, she was polite, and said "I'm trying to entertain you, why would you want to talk through the show?" The other time, she leaned over and said, "Shut the fuck up, I'm trying to play."
